I wasn't trying to suggest that you want to use RHEL desktop. I was just explaining why the Ubuntu problem wasn't found earlier. I understand your choice of Ubuntu which seems to be doing a better job of supporting more varied hardware and is more up-to-date. Personally, I am sometimes disappointed by the fact that the Red Hat distribution we use has downlevel packages when compared to Ubuntu.
Regarding InstallShield, that has been used for IBM products for years. As you can see there is inconsistency among products about supporting native install mechanisms, especially on Linux.
We are still investigating how to best handle your problem, since Ubuntu is not officially supported. I may have to provide a script which will allow you to create a fixed debian package. Stay tuned on that.
Just out of curiosity, can I assume your group is mainly Windows users with a few Linux (Ubuntu) users sprinkled in, or are there really businesses out there running mainly Linux desktops?
